| Video Discription | Nearly two-thirds of adults in the United States and an increasing percentage of the population worldwide are overweight or obese as defined by the World Health Organization. Large prospective studies show a significant association with obesity for several cancers (e.g, endometrial and breast cancer in females). It is estimated that overweight and obesity now account for one in five of all cancer deaths in women in the US. Due to high prevalence of obesity and cancer and the strong association between these two conditions this topic is of extreme importance. Indeed, a minimally invasive approach brings several benefits to obese population therefore it should be the targeted technique. Unfortunately, due to difficulties associated with obesity, laparoscopy is often avoided in this group of patients. We present in 10 steps a series of tips and tricks that cover the pre-operative work-up, the entire surgical procedure and the patient's recovery. Following these steps enhance ergonomy and makes laparoscopy easier in obese patients without increasing the cost of surgery. All images have been acquired during oncologic procedures and expose the practical maneuvers undertaken by experienced oncologic gynecologists. |
