Professor of Surgery Athens Medical School The Altemeier perineal rectosigmoidectomy is initiatated with of a full-thickness circumferential incision of the prolapsed rectum about 1-2 cm from the dentate line. The hernia sac is entered, and the prolapse is delivered. The mesocolon and mesorectum of the prolapsed rectosigmoid is serially ligated until no further redundant bowel can be pulled down. The bowel is transected and is hand-sewn with interrupted absorbable stitches to the distal anal canal. Before anastomosis, a posterior levatoplasty is performed for continence improvement. |
