| Video Discription | A colorectal anastomosis is a frequently performed procedure in colorectal surgery. Unfortunately, in around 10% of cases, it is complicated by an anastomotic leak. A lot has been said about the risk factors for leak formation. Unfortunately, we still not able to completely understand the cause of each leak. Intraoperative risk factors are insufficient vascularization and tension of the anastomosis. Incomplete or thin anastomotic donuts have also been linked to leak formation. Trimodal testing of the anastomosis had been suggested as a technique to investigate the performed colorectal anastomosis and to reveal insufficient blood supply (ICG angiography) and integrity defects (air leak and methylene blue test) intraoperatively. Identifying a defect may lead to a direct repair, an ileostomy construction, or an anastomosis redo. Thus, preventing the two most common causes of leak formation. We present a video of the procedure as performed at our department. |
