| Video Discription | What is CP angle? It is the angle formed between the cerebellum (small brain) and the pons (a very deep part of the brain, brainstem). What is the importance of CP angle? Why are Cerebello-pontine angle tumours considered critical? It is very near to the parts of the brain that regulate consciousness, balance, facial movement, hearing etc. They could be adherent to the brainstem also. What are the tumours that can occur in CP angle? Majority are schwannomas. Occasionally one may find meningiomas, ependymomas, arachnoid cyst etc What are the symptoms? How are they diagnosed? How are CP angle tumours treated? The tumours in this area could present with symptoms of hearing loss, loss of balance while walking, vertigo, hemifacial spasm, headache, difficulty in swallowing or in extreme cases, loss of consciousness. Except very, very small tumours (treated by stereotactic resection), most are treated by operation approached from behind the ear. What is Schwannoma? Schwannomas are nerve sheath tumours. Typically the facial nerve or the seventh cranial nerve is involved in the CP angle. Pressure on the fifth, eighth and lower cranial nerves can occur which may become symptomatic.
