| Video Discription | This is a small right sided acoustic neurinoma (schwannoma) totally excised in a young girl with Neurofibromatosis type II (BANF). The patient is operated in sitting position but the way the microscope camera was placed it appears as if the patient has been operated in lateral position. We do not have any intra op monitoring and we have preserved the facial (VII) and cochlear nerves (VIII) with excellent post op recovery of facial nerve function, hearing and cerebellar signs using routine micro-neurosurgical techniques. The girl who resides in Hyderabad is a student and presented subtle facial asymmetry, diminished hearing (right ear) and mild swaying while walking (unsteady gait). She has willing consented to have her picture on the tube and we have her post op photo when was in the hospital; she was discharged on day four of surgery and she came back from Hyderabad for suture removal about 10 days later. She was not on steroids or any specific medications except a short course of prophylactic antibiotics. Her hearing has improved, she has no facial nerve paresis and has normal gait. I will try and put a commentary on this video to highlight the operative steps and techniques to obtain the desired results in my “free” time. |
