Inguinal Hernia means hernia in groin. #Symptoms# Patients usually present with swelling in the groin that increases on standing or straining and decreases on lying down. Sometimes it is associated with pain. #Common complications of Hernia# 1. Irreducibility that means the swelling now does not decrease by any means. 2. Intestinal Obstruction that means intestines get obstructed in the hernia defect resulting in abdominal pain, abdominal distension and vomiting. 3. Strangulation that means blood supply to the content of hernia is reduced, it is surgical emergency. It has same symptoms as intestinal obstruction along with fever, high pulse rate and pain increases on pressing the abdomen or hernia site. #Diagnosis# Your doctor usually diagnoses this condition after examining the patient in his chamber. USG is done to confirm the diagnoses. #Treatment# Treatment of all hernias is surgery. It can be done by open method or by laparoscopy. Your doctor will discuss with you all the procedures and it depends on you, what to choose. Open repair is done almost by all surgeons and laparoscopic repair needs expertise. So choose you surgeon wisely. I would prefer laparoscopic repair for my patients. Advantages of laparoscopic hernia repair 1. Few stitches. 2. No or less pain. 3. Patients walks within few hours after surgery. 4. Patient takes diet within few hours after surgery. 5. No prolonged stay in hospital. 6. No need of dressings at all. 7. No need for prolonged rest, patient can join back his routine duties within days. #Laparoscopic Inguinal hernia procedures# 1. TAPP (Transabdominal Preperitoneal Repair) In this procedure surgeon enters the abdominal cavity, reduces hernia contents and creates a space anterior to posterior layer of abdomen (peritoneum) by dividing it and places a mesh. The defect is then sutured to keep mesh anterior to peritoneum. 2. TEP (Totally Extraperitoneal Repair) In this procedure surgeon does not enter the abdominal cavity but goes between layers of abdominal wall and stays anterior to posterior layer, creates space and places a mesh. This procedure is little difficult than TAPP and needs more expertise. I am sharing a video of difficult right inguinal hernia repair by TEP approach.
