It is a minimally invasive surgical technique used for repairing certain types of abdominal wall hernias, including inguinal hernias. The ETEP approach is a recent modification of the traditional laparoscopic approach used for hernia repair. Here's an overview of the Laparoscopic ETEP approach: Preparation: The patient is placed under general anesthesia, and the surgical team creates small incisions in the abdominal wall to insert trocars (narrow tubes) through which the surgical instruments and camera are introduced into the surgical area. Extraperitoneal Space Creation: In the ETEP approach, the surgical team creates a working space between the posterior rectus sheath /peritoneum (PPRS) complex and the abdominal wall muscles. This space is created by separating the PPRS from the posterior (back) side of the muscles. Hernia Repair: The surgeon identifies the hernia defect (the weakened area where tissue is protruding), and the hernia sac is reduced back into the abdominal cavity. Mesh is then placed over the defect to reinforce the area and prevent the hernia from recurring. Mesh Placement: The mesh is usually made of a synthetic material and is positioned to cover the hernia defect.
