| Video Discription | Enucleation is the process where the eye is removed, leaving the eye muscles and remaining orbital contents intact. It is performed when there is an ocular tumor or when the eye has suffered severe trauma and been completely destroyed, leading to the formation of a painful, blind eye. Enucleation is also performed in extreme cases of eye pain and blindness. Any defects in and around the eye area have additional cosmetic effects, with the trauma often disfiguring the eye, one of the first things people notice in the face. The changes to the shape of the eye and the face can have serious psychological effects that might hamper normal everyday functionalities of the patient. In case of blindness or other trauma, a prosthesis is fitted over an orbital implant, under the eyelid. Commonly known as glass eye, this acrylic prosthesis is designed to imitate the shape of a convex shell. The material is medical grade plastic acrylic.
