| Video Discription | Dr. Jason Engel demonstrates a Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy. Dr. Engel always employs this technique when a total nephrectomy is known to be necessary pre-operatively or in the case of high risk situations such as a solitary kidney or multiple tumors in one kidney. In such high risk cases, having hand-assist available allows Dr. Engel to perform partial kidney resections in circumstances where otherwise only an open surgery would be considered safe. Hand-Assisted laparoscopy allows Dr. Engel to typically perform a nephrectomy in 30 minutes and does not add any recovery time or extra pain to the case over standard laparoscopy.
