| Video Discription | The concept of making the globally dispersed surgical knowledge and expertise accessibly to every patient through Artificial Intelligence (AI) is called "Collective Surgical Consciousness". Translating this into global patient benefit requires infrastructural changes in the way we use data and new technologies. Beyond that AI has to display certain hallmarks to be suitable for surgery, which include robustness, interpretability and scalability. The Critical View of Safety Challenge by the Society of American Gastrointestinal Surgeons (www.cvschallenge.org) is one of the first worldwide initiatives between surgeons and computer scientists in the quest to achieve global collective surgical consciousness. AI, Global issues, Health, Innovation, Surgery, Technology Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Surgical Artificial Intelligence & Innovation Laboratory; SAIL, MGH Surgical Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the integration of AI technologies and techniques, such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, into the field of surgery to improve surgical outcomes, enhance surgeon performance, and optimize patient care. By leveraging AI capabilities, surgical processes can be streamlined, intraoperative decision-making can be supported, and the collective knowledge of surgeons worldwide can be harnessed to advance the practice of surgery. However, the application of AI in surgery presents unique challenges due to the complex nature of surgical procedures. Surgical AI requires advanced computer vision techniques to analyze surgical videos, which involve both temporal and spatial components.
