Dr Jay Mehta is the Scientific Director of Shree IVF Clinic, a luxury facility for Advanced Assisted Reproduction and Advanced Pelvic Surgery in Ghatkopar, Mumbai.
Dr Jay Mehta heads the clinic, which is a well known clinic for patients who have a Pelvic Fistula. The clinic operates more than 90% of the patients who have a Pelvic Fistula in their Charitable Program. The patients have to only pay for the medications and the disposables used.
A Fistula, in simple terms, is an abnormal communication between two organs which are not supposed to communicate. In the Female Pelvis the commonest reasons for having a Fistula are:
1. Surgical Injury ( this can happen due to an incorrect surgical technique or due to an incorrect use of instruments )
2. Birth Injury ( the incidence has gone down drastically, due to a liberal usage of cesarean sections by the Obstetricians )
3. Post Radiation following therapy for Gynec Cancers
The commonest types of fistulas which we see in the pelvis are:
1. Ureteric-Vagina: this is predominantly following a surgery for Hysterectomy where an abnormal connection develops between the Ureter and the Vagina.
2. Vesicles-Vagina: this is predominantly following surgery or following birth trauma, an abnormal connection develops between the Urinary Bladder and the Vagina.
3. Recto-Vagina: this is an abnormal connection between the Rectum and the Vagina and Is characterised by an abnormal passage of stools from the vagina.
These are extremely difficult situations for the patient as well as the family as it’s a very distressing for the patient to have an abnormal, continuous leakage of either stools or the urine from the Vagina.
These patients are operated by Dr Jay Mehta using the 3D Laparoscopic surgery, most of them Free of Cost. These surgeries require a great understanding of the Pelvic Reconstruction as well as advanced knowledge of the Anatomy.
Dr Jay Mehta does all the advanced pelvic reconstructive procedures like.
1. Laparoscopic Ureteric Reimplantation
2. Laparoscopic Bowel Anastomoses
3. Laparoscopic Boari Flap Reconstruction
4. Laparoscopic Urinary Diversion
These surgeries need an excellent post operative care and knowledge of nursing, following the surgeries and may have a prolonged recovery.
Dr Jay Mehta and his surgeries for fistula are broadcasted across the world, so that a lot of surgeons from across the world can learn and benefit from them. The team performs the highest number of reconstructive pelvic surgeries following Fistula.
