| Video Discription | Dr. Karen Zaghiyan, a premier colorectal surgeon in Los Angeles, CA and part of the teaching faculty at Cedars Sinai performs and narrates a laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy (removal of part of the colon or large intestine) for diverticulitis. As we age, almost everyone will develop diverticula, or small pouches in the colon. When these pouches form, it is known as diverticulosis. When these pouches become infected and inflamed, it is known as diverticulitis. This patient has experienced worsening symptoms of diverticulitis over the past several years. Although each episode was uncomplicated, the worsening of symptoms prompted the patient to turn to a curative surgical procedure with Dr. Zaghiyan. Dr Zaghiyan performed a laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy with a high definition camera and specially made surgical tools to minimize incisions. Due to significant scarring and inflammation, the last portion of the surgery was performed open. By doing so through a bikini incision, however, Dr Zaghiyan was able to keep scars hidden and minimize pain and hernia formation at the incision site. Post-procedure, Dr. Zaghiyan performed a flexible sigmoidoscopy to ensure the anastomosis (the connection between the two healthy ends of the colon) is air tight and to visually inspect the anastomosis for defects and bleeding.
