INDICATIONS Same as for percutaneous liver biopsy (diagnosis, grading and staging of alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and autoimmune hepatitis, grading and staging of chronic hepatitis B and C, diagnosis of hemochromatosis in index patient and relatives, diagnosis of Wilson disease, evaluation of cholestatic liver disease; primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, evaluation of abnormal liver biochemical tests in association with serologic workup that is negative or inconclusive, evaluation of efficacy and/or side effects of treatment regimens, diagnosis of a liver mass, evaluation of the status of the liver after liver transplantation, evaluate donor liver status, evaluation of fever of unknown origin) Staging/treatment of malignancy Ascites of unclear etiology Unexplained hepatosplenomegaly Wedge resections are adequate for peripherally located hepatic tumors of appropriate histologies.
