Abbas Laceration of the ureter during abdominopelvic colorectal surgery is a known risk and it can occur in 1 to 3% of cases. Risk factors for ureteral laceration include the narrow male pelvis, prior abdominopelvic surgery, and inflammatory processes such as severe diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease. When a ureteral laceration is encountered, it often necessitates conversion to an open procedure if the primary procedure is done laparoscopically. The key to a positive outcome is the identification of the laceration intraoperatively with an immediate repair. In this video, Dr Maher A. Abbas and his colleagues demonstrate laparoscopic repair of ureteral laceration during a complex Crohn's disease case. A psoas hitch is performed during the repair. Dr Maher A.
