His old head primary care doctor originally told him that it was “too small to fix”. This is not the current recommendation for hernias because they can only get larger and larger, like what happened in this patient. . Since this hernia is so large, there is much higher risk of recurrence and loss of his testicle. That is one reason why we recommend getting almost all hernias repaired once we diagnosis no matter how small or large, and whether or not they are symptomatic at all. . The other reason why I recommend almost all hernias be repaired is that a piece of intestine can herniate out and get stuck, causing a life threatening bowel obstruction.
