Abbas The last decade has seen the introduction, implementation, and rapid growth of robotic surgery in the field of colorectal surgery. Intraoperative bleeding is a known risk of major abdominal surgery and can occur at any time during the operative procedure. Bleeding during minimally invasive operations such as robotic or laparoscopic surgery may necessitate conversion to an open procedure in order to control the situation. Risk factors for bleeding include difficult body habitus in obese patients and poorly defined anatomy due to either patient-related factors or complex diseases. When it does occur, the surgeon has to determine whether to immediately convert to an open operation or if the bleeding can be identified and controlled with a minimally invasive approach. In this video, Dr Maher A. Abbas and surgical colleagues share various cases of robotic surgery during which bleeding was encountered.
