| Video Discription | Fibroids are tumours growing from the uterus. They are commonly of 3 varieties: 1. Submucous: These fibroids grow inside the cavity of the uterus. They can be as small as a rice grain or as large as a cricket ball. They can cause irregular bleeding, intermenstrual spotting, heavy bleeding during periods, painful periods and very commonly infertility. 2. Intramural fibroids: These fibroids grow within the muscle of the uterus. These usually do not cause menstrual disturbances or infertility unless they project inside the uterine cavity or are larger than 4 cms. 3. Subserosal fibroids: These fibroids grow from the outer surface of the uterus. Can attain considerable size (even the side of a watermelon). Other than causing discomfort they usually don't interfere with bleeding or fertility. Removing submucous fibroids can be a tough and complicated process in untrained hands. It involves the following steps: 1. A trained anaesthetist giving either general or spinal anaesthesia. 2. Dilating the mouth of the womb 3. Inserting a resectoscope attached to a camera and light source 4. Saline water is forced inside the cavity under pressure to open up the cavity. 5. Electric current flowing through the resectoscope is used to shave off the fibroid bit by bit 6. The anaesthetist and the team keep a check on the amount of fluid used as using above 2.5 litres can cause toxicity and even death of the patient if not managed properly. 7. The resectoscope is removed.
