| Video Discription | This is a very rare case of Laparoscopic repair of "Triple Hernia" (Indirect + Direct + Femoral Hernia). What is a hernia? A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other body part protrudes through the wall of muscle or tissue that normally contains it. Most hernias occur within the abdominal cavity, between the chest and the hips. How do we understand the difference between a direct and indirect inguinal hernia? A direct and an indirect inguinal hernia is identified by how and when the hernia is formed. An indirect inguinal hernia is the most common type that usually happens in premature births, whereas a direct inguinal hernia happens mostly in adults and increases with their age. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), men are more prone to this type of hernia. Both types of inguinal hernias cause a lump on either side of the pubis. Here are the few major differences between a direct and an indirect inguinal hernia- A direct inguinal hernia shows a bulge from the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, whereas an indirect inguinal hernia passes through the inguinal canal or the groin. In the indirect inguinal canal, it is difficult to feel the defect as it occurs behind the external oblique muscle fibers. The defect can easily be felt in a direct inguinal canal in the abdominal wall. A direct inguinal canal cannot go down to the scrotum, whereas the other can easily go down. An indirect inguinal hernia can develop in infancy when an abdomen area called the inguinal rings fails to close. A direct hernia occurs in adulthood when the abdominal muscles wall becomes weak with the increasing age. What is a femoral hernia? Your muscles are usually strong enough to keep your intestines and organs in their proper place. Sometimes, however, your intra-abdominal tissues can be pushed through a weakened spot in your muscle when you overstrain. If a portion of tissue pushes through the wall of the femoral canal, it’s called a femoral hernia. A femoral hernia will appear as a bulge near the groin or thigh. The femoral canal houses the femoral artery, smaller veins, and nerves. It’s located just below the inguinal ligament in the groin. A femoral hernia can also be called a femorocele. Women are more likely than men to suffer from a femoral hernia. Overall, femoral hernias are not common. Most hernias that affect the groin are inguinal hernias, and fewer than 3 percent of all hernias are femoral. Most femoral hernias do not cause symptoms. However, they can occasionally lead to severe problems if the hernia obstructs and blocks blood flow to your intestines.
