| Video Discription | There are many causes of nasal obstruction. One of the causes is hypertrophy, or swelling, of the inferior turbinates. The inferior turbinate is a structure within our noses that swells in response to allergens or other irritants in the air that we breathe. Although they are meant to be able to both swell and come back down to a normal size, after a long enough period of inflammation, the structure remains swollen and enlarged. You may sense this as a blocked nostril, either on one side or both sides. The first line treatment for turbinate hypertrophy is topical therapy with rinses and sprays (see my other videos for more information about these treatments), but if a patient fails to resolve with that, they are then candidates for a surgical procedure called an inferior turbinate reduction. There are many methods of doing this procedure, but many only have temporary results. For the longest term results, a submucus resection as shown in this video is the best option. It is also important to reduce the size appropriately and not over reduce the structure. If too much of the structure is removed, the airflow will not be directed appropriately into the nasal cavity, and the ability to sense airflow can be affected, so it is important to only reduce back to a normal size.
