Congratulations to Dr. Chris on performing the first-ever video-assisted anal fistula treatment - VAAFT. This is a groundbreaking day at IBI Healthcare Institute. This is a surgery used to treat anal fistula. An anal fistula is a small tunnel that connects an abscess, an infected cavity in the anus, to an opening in the skin around the anus. Symptoms of an anal fistula include: • Frequent anal abscesses • Pain and swelling around the anus • Pus from an opening around the anus • Irritation of the skin around the anus after drainage • Pain during bowel movements • Anal bleeding • General fatigue Treatment for anal fistula: There are various treatments for this condition. However, the procedure performed in this case is the video-assisted anal fistula treatment (VAAFT). VAAFT is a safer and less aggressive way of treating this disease by removing the abscess and tunnel created. The fistula is removed through a special electric current. A very small camera enters the fistula’s canal, completely removing the dead tissue inside the canal, cleaning the site with plenty of rinsing, and then using fibrin glue to close the internal fistula hole. Next, the fistula will be closed with the least possible ulceration. This procedure will treat the anal fistula with minimal incision and without the sphincter muscles being cut, and the risk of recurrence is very low. Advantages of VAAFT: • Less pain and bleeding. • It is an outpatient surgery (no hospitalization required). • Doesn't cause fecal incontinence. • Duration of treatment and cost of VAAFT are less. • The low recurrence rate of the disease after surgery. • Recovery time with VAAFT is very short compared to traditional methods.
