| Video Discription | This video demonstrates how to close the left atrium using V-Loc barbed sutures, which have several advantages. The V-Loc™ suture by Medtronic avoid the need to tie knots to anchor the suture. Its dual-angle barbs allow suture to pass smoothly through tissue in one direction, but prevent it from slipping back through the tissue. The barbs hold the atrial edges together and distribute tension along the entire length of the suture. The video also demonstrates some basic robotic surgical steps on bileaflet mitral valve repair, using CV-4 Gore-tex sutures, a premade ruler, a bulldog clip "on a leash" and the freehand-tie technique. This simple and reproducible technique enables the robotic mitral repair to be performed by a single surgeon, rather than requiring an additional bed-side cardiac surgeon. The Robotic platform provides superior visualisation and enhanced dexterity, through keyhole incisions. Robotic surgery is an integral part of our Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery Program. |
