Advantages of ab-externo approach include ensuring subconjunctival placement of the stent (leading to an ideal filtering bleb and lower needling rate) and easier access to superior conjunctiva in certain patients with difficulty anatomy (eg. deep sockets, high cheekbones, hazy cornea etc).
